Purpose
This article describes how to restore access to the Password Secure Server Manager when the login password has been forgotten. Since the password cannot be reset, the npwsConfigDb must be re-created.
Prerequisites
• Access to the MSSQL Server hosting the npwsConfigDb
• Permission to delete and re-create databases
• Ability to stop and start the Netwrix Password Secure Service
• Existing data databases available for reintegration
• License file or license credentials for the Configuration Wizard
Procedure
1. Stop the Netwrix Password Secure Service
• Stop the "Netwrix Password Secure Service" on the application server.
• This is required before deleting or re-creating the npwsConfigDb.
2. Identify the correct npwsConfigDb
• Each application server uses its own configuration database, for example:
npwsConfigDb_SERVER1, npwsConfigDb_SERVER2, etc.
• Ensure the correct database for the affected server is selected.
3. Delete or re-create the npwsConfigDb
• The configuration database must be empty.
• This is the only supported method, as the Server Manager password cannot be reset.
4. Start the Netwrix Password Secure Service
• Start the service again after the database is re-created.
• The application server will initialize a new default configuration database.
5. Log in to the Password Secure Server Manager
• Default password after re-creation: admin
• On first login, you must change this password.
6. Complete the Configuration Wizard
6.1 Add the license
You must activate the license by either:
• Uploading a license file, or
• Entering license credentials (account-based licensing)
Important information regarding license credentials:
• When using license credentials, the system may display the error “Too many activations!”.
• If this occurs, the support team must reset the license activation counter.
• A support ticket with priority URGENT must be created.
• It is also possible to inform Support in advance so that an additional activation can be enabled proactively.
6.2 Reintegrate the existing data databases
To reattach the existing data storage:
In the Configuration Wizard, select the option to use existing MSSQL databases.
Select the existing data databases (e.g., PasswordSecureDataDb).
Save and apply the configuration.
Once completed, the environment reconnects to the previously stored data.
Notes
• Password reset is not possible; only re-creating the npwsConfigDb restores access.
• Ensure the correct configuration database is used in multi-server environments.
• Do not delete data databases—only the configuration database must be re-created!
